Objective: The aim of this study was to compare of the Intrinsic Estimator method and the age, period and cohort accounting model that was used for identifying age, period and cohort trends in incidence, prevalence and mortality rates.

Method: First the age, period and cohort accounting model and then The IE method were explained and their advantages and disadvantages were mentioned and their result was compared. To describing method the data from 2 studies "Trend of illegal drug, alcohol and trend of cigarettes use in Tehran University of medical science students from 85 to 88"was used.

Results: The prevalence of smoking in women was showed an increasing, decreasing and increasing trend on age effect. The Intrinsic Estimator could predict a preventing effect for an early age factor for smoking. In descriptive model a decreasing trend from old to young cohorts at nearly all of age groups was seen. But The Intrinsic Estimator method didn’t show any cohort effect for alcohol consumption for women.

Conclusion: Currently the Intrinsic Estimator method is the best method for solving linear dependence between the three variables of age, birth cohort and period in this kind of studies. But researchers should use it with caution and awareness of its many pitfalls.
