Background: This study was conducted to assess the validity and reliability the Persian version of the "Problematic Internet Use" standard questionnaire, which was translated to Farsi for the first time, to be implemented in the epidemiologic studies aiming the pathology of the catastrophic use of internet and social networks.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in three medical universities in 2016. The questionnaire includes five domains including preference for online social interaction; mood regulation; cognitive preoccupation; compulsive internet use; and negative outcomes. Each domain contained three questions and the questionnaire had 15 questions. Therefore, the lowest and the highest obtained score for all questions was between 15 and 105. The score of 15-45 was normal, 46-65 was mild disorder, 66-85 was moderate disorder, and 86-105 was severe disorder. The validity of the questionnaire was assessed using "Content Validity Ratio" (CVR) and its reliability was explored using "Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient".
Results: In this study, 986 students participated from Tehran, Iran, and Kermanshah medical universities. Mean age of the participants was 21.98 years. Mean overall score was 48.72 with minimum and maximum scores of 15 and 95. Based on the questionnaire, score of 416 students (42.2%) was normal, 395 (40.1%) had mild disorder, 137 (13.9%) had moderate disorder, and 38 (3.8%) had severe disorder. Based on CVR, the validity score of 10 questions was 100%, three questions 80%, one question 40%, and one question zero. The validity score of the whole questionnaire was 85.3%. Based on alpha coefficient, the reliability of the domain of preference for online social interaction was 87.6%; mood regulation 91.1%; cognitive preoccupation 89.8%; compulsive internet use 90.8%; and negative outcomes 86.2%. The reliability score of the whole questionnaire was 921.5%.
Conclusion: The validity and reliability of the Persian version of the "Problematic Internet Use" questionnaire were high and thus it can be used as a standard tool in epidemiologic studies, which explore the pathology of injuries, related to internet and social networks.
