Introduction: Factors related to road traffic injuries (RTIs) are generally categorized into three groups: vehicle related factors, environmental factors and human factors. Human risk factors are RTIs, which has been especially little studied in Iran. The objective of this study was to calculate the annual Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) of the most important human risk factor for RTIs in the streets and highways of the Great Tehran.
Methods: In this study, 124518 individuals registered in the form of the COM114 from the Police Information and Communication Technology (ICT- FAVA) data system of the country, have been employed in 2014. The regression model was used to estimate the magnitude of the impact of RTIs offenders on the street and highway axes from the Adjusted Relative Risk Ratio. To estimate the PAF, the prevalence and effect size were calculated based on the risk ratio (RR) using the baseline method or the Miettinen formula.
Results: The PAF of the reverse gear driving was 1.98 percent. Failure to observe the front distance was ranked second with 1.93%. Driving with the rear gear and non-observance of front distance in the streets increases RTIs with 22% and 23%, respectively. On the highways of the Great Tehran, the largest proportion of PAF resulted from driving with the rear gear was 1.96%, driving with a sudden changeover was 1.90%. and from unauthorized speeding was 1.87%. Unauthorized speeding increases the risk of RTIs by 23%.
Conclusion: Considering the contribution of PAF related to human risk factors in this study (Driving with the rear gear, non-observance of front distance, inability to control vehicle and non-observance of transversal distance, sudden redirection, unauthorized speeding and unauthorized overtaking), monitoring and perfect control of drivers’ violation behaviors can lead to about 10% of road crash reduction on streets. Also, on highways, the use of strategies to prevent driving violations behaviors can prevent up to 15% of RTIs.
