Background and Objectives: Alcohol use is highly prevalent among people who use drugs, and cessation is influenced by complex biological, psychological, and social factors. However, current knowledge regarding factors associated with attempts to quit alcohol among drug users in Iran is very limited, and no study has specifically investigated these factors in the western region using addiction registry data. Therefore, this study was designed to analyze the factors influencing attempts to quit alcohol among drug users, utilizing data from the addiction registry system in western Iran.
Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 460 individuals from the addiction registry system of Farabi Hospital in Kermanshah. Data were collected on demographic characteristics, variables related to alcohol and substance use, and attempts to quit alcohol. Data analysis was performed using R software.
Results: Of the 460 participants, 393 (85%) had attempted to quit alcohol. In the weighted logistic regression model, employment (self-employed (p-value = 0.036); employed (p-value = 0.002)), consumption of commercial alcohol (p-value =0.017) or both commercial and homemade alcohol (p-value = 0.032), and having a family member who consumes alcohol (p-value = 0.002) were identified as positive and significant predictors of quit attempts. Demographic variables, alcohol content (%), cigarette and hookah smoking, and history of mental disorders showed no statistically significant association with quit attempts.
Conclusion: Attempts to quit alcohol among drug users are primarily associated with employment, commercial alcohol consumption, and family history of alcohol consumption. From a practical standpoint, designing job support interventions, prioritizing homemade alcohol users in cessation encouragement programs, and leveraging family networks as motivational factors are recommended.
